Sub-Saharan Africa: Left Behind?

The faces of globalization in Sub-Saharan Africa were decidedly very worried. And with good reason: GDP growth in the 1990s recovered from the low 1980s level and the percent of people living in absolute poverty decreased slightly (see Table 7.1), but given the high rates of population growth, the number of absolutely poor grew by 25%. The absolute number of poor grew five times more than the figure for Latin America and twice that for South Asia in the period 1980–1997 (White and Killick 2001, p. xiii).
